Renewal price is the number most comparisons skip. Three of Wix's tiers — Core, Business, and Business Elite — each went up $0.77 in 2026. Squarespace's tiers renew at the same list price you signed up for, with no separate intro-versus-renewal jump. Wix also bundles a free domain for the first year on annual plans; renew it and a .com moves to roughly $14.95 to $19.35 a year. Monthly billing costs more on either builder — Wix's exact monthly rate now only shows at checkout, running roughly $24 to $172 depending on plan.
The real cost gap isn't at signup. It's at renewal, when Wix can increase your bill and Squarespace doesn't.
Where Wix wins
Wix wins on AI depth and on commerce that comes standard. Wix Harmony, launched in January 2026, replaced the earlier AI Site Generator. Describe your business in plain language and Harmony's Aria agent drafts a full site. Keep talking to Aria and it edits an existing site on request — new palette, a redesigned page, added commerce — with a manual editor underneath whenever you want to take over by hand. That existing-site editing works on every plan, including free.
Commerce, scheduling, and payment tools come built into every plan too, with no extra software to add for a store or a booking calendar. If you're a local service business or a creator who needs bookings or product sales fast, this matters. You don't hunt for a third-party payment plugin or pricing tier. It's there.
Where it doesn't win: exporting and vendor lock-in. Leaving Wix means rebuilding somewhere else — the platform has no site export at all. Once you've built there, your content and design are locked in. If you're someone who plans ahead for switching costs, that's a material problem.
Where Squarespace wins
Squarespace wins on design polish and on being upfront about what its AI does. Blueprint AI runs a short interview — brand personality, the pages you need, a handful of palettes — and assembles a designer-grade starting site in minutes. After that, its AI stays assistive: copy suggestions inside text blocks, SEO descriptions, generated images, plus a credit-metered visibility tool. It does not rebuild a site you already have. Blueprint is for new sites only, by design.
And once you're on Core or a higher plan, Squarespace's own transaction fee drops to zero — only its cheapest Basic plan charges 2%. That's a cleaner path to profitable commerce than Wix's flat inclusion (which assumes you don't mind paying for tools you don't use yet).
Price certainty at renewal is the other win. If you sign up for $23/month on Core, you renew at $23/month. Wix doesn't promise that. Three of its tiers have built-in increases, so your bill climbs without your permission.

If you're coming from another platform with years of content and design work, you're not bringing it with you cleanly.
